Do you know what vitamins and nutrients improve eye health and sight?

Eye is a very complex organ that needs a great care and eye health can be improved by including vitamins and nutrients into the diet. Diet with good supply of nutrients protect eyes from harmful light, decreases the progression of age-related degenerative diseases, and cataracts. Age-related macular degenerative diseases are primary reason for permanent loss of vision in people aged above 60. Deterioration of light-sensitive cells in the macula area of the retina leads to age-related macular degenerative diseases. A cataract is clouding of natural lens of eye that leads to a decrease in vision. Research suggests that intake of antioxidants in food may reduce the risk of cataracts and macular degeneration and even protects other parts of the body from oxidative damage and inflammation. Recommended Dietary Allowance (RDA) is the normal daily dietary intake level of a nutrient necessary to meet the body requirements.

Specific vitamins that contribute to eye health are

Vitamin A:

Vitamin A is a group of unsaturated organic compounds that has many functions. Retina of eye requires vitamin A in the form of retinal. Retinal combines with protein opsin to form rhodopsin which allows the eye to see in low-light conditions. Deficiency of vitamin A is the leading cause of childhood blindness that is avoidable. The primary source for vitamin A is Beta carotene. It is a type of plant pigment that is present in many colorful fruits and vegetables.

Vitamin E:

Tocopherol or alpha-tocopherol (Vitamin E) is a powerful antioxidant found in cereals, nuts and green leafy vegetables.  It protects eye from free radicals, which damage the proteins in eye tissue and lower the risk of developing macular degeneration and cataracts.

Vitamin C:

Vitamin C is another powerful antioxidant that protects eye cells from oxidative damage.

Vitamin D:

Vitamin D deficiency can cause macular degeneration. Lack of vitamin D is accompanied with diabetes, which drastically affects the vision and the eyes.

Vitamin B complex:

B complex helps to reduce the risk of macular degeneration and uveitis, a common cause of blindness. They help to reduce risk of chronic inflammation and reduce the elevated homocysteine levels in the blood, which are associated with vascular problems that affect retina.

Some other important Supplements for healthy vision are

Bioflavonoids (Flavonoids)

Lutein and Zeaxanthin

Zinc

Omega-3 fatty acids

Selenium

Therefore, by consuming these specific vitamins and supplements one can improve their eye health and protect them from the risk of potential eye problems.
