Precautions to take while wearing contact lenses

Contact lenses are thin ocular prosthetic devices that are employed directly on the surface of the eyes.. Contact lenses are used by about 140 million people worldwide. They are developed to correct refractive errors and for some cosmetic or therapeutic reasons. The contact lens sticks to the tear fluid on the eye surface and moves naturally. Contact lens gives a clear cut peripheral vision and does not collect moisture and this makes them preferable for sports and other outdoor activities. There are 5 types of contact lenses

  • Soft lenses
  • Silicone hydrogel lenses
  • Gas permeable lenses
  • Hybrid contact lenses
  • PMMA lenses

Wearing contact lenses can change the structure of cornea, amount of tear production, and levels of oxygen and carbon dioxide. These changes can lead to irritations, or in severe cases, infections. Some problems associated with contact lens are:

  • Burning & Itching sensation
  • Redness
  •  Eye Discharge
  • Grittiness
  • Light Sensitivity
  • Dry Eyes
  • Blurr vision

These problems can be overcome by following some safety precautions like

  • Wash your hands with soap and dry hands with a lint-free cloth or tissues before installing the lens.
  • Remove contact lenses while going to bed, shower or swimming.
  • Do not use the same contact lens solution.
  • Do not use contact lens case for more than 3 months.
  • Take a contact lens prescription from an eye doctor.
  • Remove the lens if you observe any itching after installation.
  • Do regular blinking to keep lens moist and clean.
  • Take routine contact lens eye checks.
  • Close eyes while using cosmetics or aerosol sprays.
  • Wash the lens if they come in contact with any dirt.

Therefore, Contact lenses are the safest medical devices when worn carefully and correctly.
